A London-based diamond jeweller has released a £12,000 diamond from space, and it’s still to be claimed where it crash-landed in Lincolnshire yesterday.

The diamond will be gifted to whoever finds it and after the rock’s free-fall was carefully tracked to the village of Lea, near Gainsborough, residents and visitors are on the hunt.

The diamond was launched into space by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and online retailer 77 Diamonds at 9am on August 7, from a field in Derbyshire.

It touched ground at around 12 noon that day and is still yet to be claimed.

In order to launch the rock, it was mounted to a steel frame and attached to a helium balloon.

The balloon rose to 100,000 feet before atmospheric pressure caused it to pop and fall back to earth.

People could follow the progress of the drop by using #diamondinthesky on twitter.

The stunt was performed to mark the launch of the retailer’s new interactive ‘online universe‘.

After a £170,000 refurbishment, 10 new members of staff and a week closure, the Revolution bar on Park Street in Lincoln has revealed its new look.

In addition to fresh decor, staff hope that discreet changes to the layout will also keep customers coming back.

The front of the bar has been opened up with seating booths and ‘tree trunk’ tables have been removed to create more floor space.

The rear dance floor has been raised to street level and original brickwork and windows have been exposed.

The food and drinks menus will remain the same, with the addition of a special mojitos menu.

Samina Hussain, Revolution Lincoln‘s General Manager, said: “The whole team have been through major training this week and we are really emphasising that customer focus.

“The space has a completely different vibe. It’s a lot more useable and the dance floor is not so dark and dingy in the day.

“On Friday, August 15 we are having an after-work party and that’s all aimed at people who work in the city centre and the surrounding areas. We want them to come down and see what we do, there’ll be lots of entertainment that night.

“We’ve got lots of space to hire out and we offer lots for private parties so we are encouraging anyone celebrating any occasion to get in touch.”

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice is getting ready to open up its 26th shop in Lincoln later this week.

The charity shop will open on August 16 in a newly built unit on Wragby Road, near the entrance to the Tesco supermarket.

St Barnabas was awarded the space after they won Tesco’s ‘Yours for a Year’ competition.

The staff have decided to celebrate the opening of the new shop at 10am with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, featuring the City Sherriff and Lady.

Additionally, there will be a number of family events, such as raffles and games, plus sweets and balloons giveaways. All will be hosted by Barnabas Bear, the charity’s mascot.

Phil Brandon, Commercial Manager for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, said: “This is a brilliant location for our new shop and puts us right in the heart of the community we serve.

“The expansion of our retail shops division will mean that we can raise awareness of our organisation whilst allowing us to generate vital funds to continue caring for people across Lincolnshire.”

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice are also appealing for more volunteers to join their team in the new store.

The charity particularly aims to help young people aged 16 – 25 work towards retail qualifications, so are encouraged to apply.

Phil Brandon added: “We can’t thank Tesco and the people of Lincoln enough for giving us this opportunity.

“We have had nothing but kind words and support from our local community, from the point of winning the competition to readying ourselves for the official opening.

“Our wonderful team of staff and volunteers are eagerly looking forward to welcoming each and every supporter into our new shop and begin raising even more money for hospice care.”

Testing a 3D printer available at the Lincolnshire Technology Hubs.

The Lincolnshire Technology Hubs, in Lincoln, Louth, Mablethorpe, Boston and Horncastle have been shortlisted for a national digital expertise award.

The hubs, set up by Lincolnshire County Council’s Onlincolnshire project to give businesses access to state-of-the-art digital technology, are shortlisted in the Digital Education and Expertise category at the Next Generation Digital Challenge Awards 2014.

The awards aim to recognise innovative and inspiring projects which help improve infrastructure or access to new technology.

Chairman of the County Council Cllr Bill Aron said: “It’s been a real team effort to establish the hubs and being shortlisted for this prestigious national award is a testament to the hard work and commitment people have put in.

“It’s also great for news for the county’s businesses which can access these potentially award-winning hubs for free.”

The five hubs are part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Four of them house the latest digital technology, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, scanners and GoPro cameras.

Meanwhile the Louth hub has motion capture spot technology, which can be used to film people or machinery moving at high speed. The footage can then be played back in slower motion for analysis.

All of the equipment can be borrowed or used for free by eligible businesses, with a charge to cover insurance costs and materials used. This can also include 12 hours of free one-to-one advice and support.

Cllr Colin Davie, Executive Member for Economic Development at Lincolnshire County Council, which runs the onlincolnshire project, added:

“The awards recognise the hard work we have put in and the success we have had in connecting businesses to next-generation technology.

“The hubs can help transform businesses and the possibilities are endless. You could be an architecture firm looking to create a 3D model of your design, an engineer who wants to develop a prototype or a business owner looking for a digital application to improve productivity.

“The idea is to offer the opportunity to try out new equipment before making a purchase and access expert advice and support so businesses can grow. We also encourage local businesses to work together to help come up with new ideas or solutions to problems.”

The winners of the awards will be announced at the NextGen 2014 Conference in Derby in November.

Burton Road Chippy are no strangers to winning awards.

A fish and chips shop in Lincoln is in the finals to win best chip shop in the region at the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards.

Burton Road Chippy is competing against six other successful fish and chip shops in Eastern England to win regional Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.

Whoever wins the regional spot will then go into the national heat to win the ultimate title, which will be announced in January in London next year.

The six chippies are:

  • Burton Road Chippy, Lincoln, Lincolnshire
  • George’s Fish Bar, Bourne, Lincolnshire
  • The Cods Scallops, Wollaton, Nottingham
  • Grosvenor Fish Bar, Norwich, Norfolk
  • My Plaice Fish & Chips, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
  • French’s Fish Shop, Wells next the Sea, Norfolk

To be in with a chance initially, each shop was visited by a mystery diner and judged by industry experts.

The shops are assessed on product quality, sustainable sourcing, marketing and customer service.

Every year event organiser Seafish seeks the best talent to recognise those achieving the best standards in the fish frying industry.

Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, said: “These awards have not only improved the industry standards by consistently rewarding and testing businesses, they have also raised positive awareness of the issues surrounding sustainable fishing practices and encouraged shops to implement sustainable sourcing.

“Last year we witnessed some of the highest calibre of entrants ever. The bar is constantly rising and we can’t wait to see the top fryers battle it out this year.”

The top 10 regional shops will be announced in October, then invited on a study trip to Norway to see first-hand why Norway is regarded as one of the world’s most sustainable fishing nations.

Stuart Fusco is the owner of Quayside and last year’s winner of the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.

He said: “The judging process is very rigorous and challenging, but ultimately it comes down to your enthusiasm and love for the industry.

“Fish and chips are our family’s passion, and it’s an honour to be recognised for all our hard work. We would highly recommend getting involved in the competition because the opportunities have been superb and we’ve loved every minute.”

Lincolnshire Co-op Community Champions Hearing-dogs-(1)

A fundraising scheme run by Lincolnshire Co-Operative has seen more than £244,000 shared between over 380 groups, including 106 in the Lincoln area.

Now, Lincolnshire Co-Op is looking for its next round of champions to apply by Friday, September 26.

Lincolnshire Co-Op’s Community Champions initiative sees donations pledged on behalf of dividend card holders every three months to local charities and organisations.

Every time one of the shop’s members made a purchase in a Co-Op outlet, a donation from the Community Champions pot would go to the group supported at the time.

Among previous champions benefitting from the scheme was Welton and Dunholme Methodist Church.

The church organisation was a champion between June and September 2013 and received a funding boost of £1,821. They’re spending the money on a new kitchen.

Development Coordinator at the church, Peter McCree, said: “Work started on our new building at the beginning of July and we’re looking forward to it being finished in time for Christmas.

“We’re very grateful for the support of Lincolnshire Co-op and of our local residents. It’s great to see money raised by a local business supporting a cause that’s part of their community.”

Co-op’s Member Engagement Manager Richard Whittaker said: “It’s a great chance for charities and community groups to get a fundraising boost.

“It’s simple to apply to be a Community Champion. Groups just have to fill out a short form and if they’re chosen, they’ll be able to raise hundreds of pounds.

“The more our members shop in our outlets, the more the Community Champions raise, so if a charity or group rallies their supporters the total could be even more.”

For more information on how to apply to be a part of the scheme, visit the website, or pick up a form in your nearest store.

Demand for day care and community-supported living has spurred a Lincoln business to expand.

Navigation Support & Care Services has recently moved into a second location at the Carlton Centre, off Outer Circle Road.

The business now employs 56 people and is looking to grow further as more agencies and individuals call upon its services.

Sarah Caines, a director of Navigation Support & Care Services, said: “Due to the growth of our business and the nature of this work, we are always looking for more staff.  We are currently looking to fill three new positions, but working for us is not simply a job, it is a vocation.”

Navigation Support & Care Services, which was established just three years ago, offers support to people with learning disabilities and physical difficulties and their families.

Sarah and her husband Aldrin Caines established the service after Aldrin took redundancy from his former post as a Lincolnshire County Council Community Support Manager.

Sarah said: “When we opened Navigation in April 2011 we hoped that everything would go well, but we never envisaged moving to such prestigious premises this quickly. This has happened due to the outstanding work of our wonderful team, which we cannot thank enough.”

The new premises were leased to the company by chartered surveyors Banks Long & Co.

Jag Landa, a surveyor at Banks Long & Co, said: “We are pleased to have assisted Navigation Care & Support Services with its expansion. This is a growing service business and it is pleasing to know that the Carlton Centre premises are already proving ideal for its needs.”

Lincolnshire homes in urban areas lead market recovery

Properties in urban areas are leading the market recovery in Lincolnshire, according to new research.

Data collected by Savills estate agents shows homes in commuter locations and school areas have seen the most growth.

The market reached a turning point last summer and positive quarterly price growth has been seen every quarter since.

Rupert Fisher, residential director at Savills Lincoln, said: “The prime housing markets across the UK all saw positive annual price growth in the year to June 2014, rising by 5.7% on average.

“While price growth in the East Midlands was slightly more subdued at 4.3%, this is the strongest year-on-year growth since mid 2010.”

According to the research, 75% of buyers in the East Midlands work in local cities and towns.

Due to this, places that have an easy commute or are close to highly regarded grammar and private schools have become increasingly popular.

Rupert added: “For those wanting to commute to London from our county, the value gap between the two locations is large enough that you can retain a property in the capital.

“With the current pound per square foot in the East Midlands averaging £170 for prime property compared to £1,200 in London, it is evident how far your money will go.”

Prime properties in cities and towns in the East Midlands have seen annual growth of 4.8%, leaving their values — 9.4% below the 2007 peak, while properties in rural locations  still remain -15.8% below peak.

New Lincoln business will deliver lunch to the office door

Odysseas Ioannou and Stuart Fawcett of Munchbox

A new service in Lincoln aims to bring people their lunchtime sandwich or salad without them needing to leave the desk.

Munchbox is a new Lincoln service set up by Odysseas Ioannou and Stuart Fawcett.

The team creates a variety of sandwiches, salads and baked treats for locals to order between 9am and 12pm, using locally sourced, Lincolnshire produce.

The business is inspired by an Indian service called Dabbawalla, which Stuart saw in action during a visit to the country, but uses the internet to take lunch orders and deliver them all around Lincoln and some surrounding villages.

After meeting at Odysseas’ family fish bar in Navenby, The Old Reindeer, the duo decided to use his catering experience and the Dabbawalla idea to create Munchbox, to ensure those at work are definitely finding time to get in a meal during the day, regardless of a busy schedule.

A sample of the breads Munchbox says it will offer for personalised sandwiches.

After securing funding through the Virgin Start up initiative, the pair began setting up the venture, ready for its fist batch on deliveries from September 1 — although orders are been taken online already.

Customers select the day they want a meal delivered and it’s made fresh that morning. They will receive a text before the meal is delivered.

You can also order up to two weeks in advance, or do next day orders up until midnight the day before.

They said: “We observed that people currently have very limited opportunities to ensure they get what they want for lunch.

“People could shop for and pack their lunch themselves before letting it sit in the fridge overnight, after which they take it (or forget to take it!) to work with them. It’s a dull task to do both and not always a high priority on the list of things for a busy person, so buying lunch is often a convenient option on the day of demand.

“Well, convenient if they get time to go and shop for it; statistics show that up to two thirds of people are not getting a lunch break and the demand for overtime is dramatically increasing.”

The new Next store in Lincoln’s Waterside Shopping Centre has created 32 new jobs in the city centre.

As previously reported, Next will open another store inside the shopping centre on September 11.

As part of the ongoing £9 million redevelopment of the Waterside Shopping Centre, Next will open in the old food court next to H&M, spread over two floors.

Next will open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays.

It’s been two years since a Next store featured in the city centre, with the nearest Next store being in Valentine Retail Park on Tritton Road.

To celebrate the opening, Next will be giving away 100 golden tickets to the first 100 customers who enter the store, with the chance to win a £100 Next gift card.

Store Manager, Helga Corby said: “Its great to be back in the centre of Lincoln. We’ve wanted to return to the city centre for some time and when the opportunity presented itself we just had to take it.

“The store will focus on bringing all the latest trends to the city centre, including mens, womens & kids ranges.”

Roy Greening, General Manager for Waterside Shopping, added: “The arrival of Next to the Waterside, alongside H&M, will help take Lincoln’s high street shopping experience to a new level, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome two of the UK’s most popular fashion brands into the centre.

“The opening of both stores (H&M and Next) will mark the final stages of our multi-million pound refurbishment, but there’s still more to come as other retailers make their way to the Waterside in the future.”

The Next unit in Valentine’s Retail Park, which offers womenswear, menswear, children’s and home, will remain unaffected.
